Ruby Bridges

Did you ever think about who was the first kid to break the barrier of the rules for blacks and whites and what schools they can go to? Do you think that they had a hard time getting through their life when white people didn’t accept African Americans? Her name is Ruby Bridges, and she was the first African American kid to go to an all-white school.

She was born black so she was properly taught at a young age that she couldn’t do things that other people could. So, by the time she was 6, she knew that she had to learn and do things differently. The board of education put out a test for black children to measure whether or not they could attend an all-white school. Ruby took the test and she happened to pass, along with 5 other kids in New Orleans. Ruby’s parents wanted her to go to an all-white school for better education. I'm sure they knew that it would be hard for her but they were willing to take the risk.

Ruby wanted to and accomplished being the first colored kid to go to an all-white school. She was just a kid so she didn’t know that she had done something that would change the world forever. When word got out that a black child would attend an all-white school, parents protested and didn’t allow their kids to go to school. This effect made Ruby and a teacher be the only 2 people in the classroom every day. According to Wikipedia, “The Bridges family suffered for their decision to send her to the school.” This was because her father lost his job as a gas station attendant and the grocery store they went to didn’t let them shop there anymore. With no money and not a lot of food, this left the Bridges family with lots of issues. They willingly took the risk and they definitely made the right decision. Ruby obviously accomplished being the only black kid at an all-white school, allowing this event to completely change everyone's opinion on colored people like herself.

After all,  Ruby changed people’s perspective on black people. This allowed people to become friends no matter the color of your skin or your culture etc, in the present days. To be honest, I don’t believe a lot of people actually know who Ruby Bridges is. If someone asked “who was the first African American kid to go to an all-white school,” I’m not sure everyone would know the answer. Either way, she still made a big statement in history, making Ruby Bridges a great unsung hero.

  2. I like how you added a lot of information in your blog that is less likely for people to know, for example I did not know that her family struggled by letting her go to school, I also think it is horrible how people treated her and other black people, When did the other classmates start going back to school with ruby?
