Introduction

If you want to know more things about hockey, you're in the right place. I’m Oatmeal and I can tell you all about hockey, because I play it.

Equipment

All the equipment you need for hockey is a helmet, skates, gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey pants, shin pads, plus a hockey stick. And last you need a jock to cover your private area... but you also need a jersey and socks for you to wear with your skates, and socks to cover your shin pads.

History

Hockey was invented by James Creighton in the late 1800s in Nova Scotia. It was typically played with a couple people but later in time it evolved into the team sport we know today. Now, Canada is the most well-known country people associated hockey with. Did you know, the first-ever hockey team to win the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Hockey Club in 1893.

Rules

There are only a couple rules in the game. Icing, Penalties, Offsides, and catching the puck with your hand. Icing is when you are behind the red line in the middle of the ice, and you shoot the puck all the way down to the opposing team goal line. Offsides is when you cross the opposing team’s blue line before the puck does. And catching the puck with your hand is pretty self-explanatory. There are three types of penalties: minor, major, and misconduct. They all mean different time periods in the penalty box, minor being the smallest time. There is a penalty box and you could stay in it for 1 to 5 minutes. Checking is a well-known penalty in hockey, checking is a number of defensive techniques aimed at disrupting an opponent with possession of the puck or separating them from the puck entirely. But when you go into a certain level of hockey, (batman) it becomes legal in hockey. Did you know, the person who invented the rules of hockey was the same guy who invented the sport. J G A Creighton.

Conclusion

This is all you really need to know about hockey, the equipment needed, the story of hockey, and most rules. Also, there are articles that explain the sport better than me, like Ducksters or Britannica, and if you just search up hockey, it will give you more information. Also, if you're willing to try hockey I suggest learning how to skate first like going to a public skate at your local rink. Then you could try out for your local hockey team. Lastly, I hope this helps anyone who is interested in learning more things about hockey.

  2. Wow, I didn't know you needed so much equipment for hockey, that is extremely interesting. Also, I didn't know that the Stanley Cup Era started back in 1893, that is longer than a century ago. There are also a lot more penalties in hockey than I thought. Why is Canada the most well known country people associate hockey with? Good job!

  3. I love hockey too, although I never played it. I did figure skate however, and still enjoy ice skating. Watching hockey, especially the Bruins, is a favorite activity for me. Tuukka Rask is my favorite player, so I am disappointed he left the team because of Covid. Your blog was full of facts and I learned that the Montreal Hockey Club was the first team to win the Stanley Cup!
